Soundscapes Soundscapes | 2nd Year Digital Design Studio Shenkar College, Israel 2009

Tutors: Visiting Professor : Arch. Christophe DM BARLIEB, Digital Workshops Coordinator : B. Des, M.A. Efrat GILBOA, Theoretical Seminar : Dr. Noa GEDI

Abstract: The studio focuses on design processes derived from theoretical and pragmatic concepts in the digital media. The study process is based on a series of exercises studying spatial transformation over time in set territories, movements, and the transference of forces. In a sequence of exercises, the students test the translation of fundamental concepts of digital media to a model and to a virtual context in interior space. The virtual context serves as a central tool in determining a conceptual design, space configuration, movement, composition of different typologies of interior space and presentation. Three dimensional models, animation, simulation and digital analysis are used as tools for design, documentation, and presentation of space.

RBDw1.jpg Rule Based Design Workshop at TU Berlin (paper 07.10.09)

Authors: Christophe Barlieb, Kristoffer Josefsson, Sven Pfeiffer, Ines Putz (Berlin University of Technology, Berlin, Germany), Dimitrie Stefanescu (University of Bucharest, Bucharest, Romania), Norbert Palz, Martin Tamke (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark)

Abstract: A new cluster of a possible series of digital design & digital fabrication workshops held at the Berlin University of Technology (TU Berlin), Department of Building Design, School of Architecture, explores teaching and learning Rule Based Design. The first workshop introduced computational logical and design concepts to lead into a second workshop further exploring digital design and fabrication tools. The goal is to produce a full-scale prototype to test the ideas, methods and materials. This paper focuses on digital design & fabrication via a pedagogical exploration between academics and practitioners.

Keywords: Teaching project 1:1; Computational logic; Form making; Rule based design; Digital fabrication.

WW.jpg Whispering Wind | Digital Practice and the Sustainable Agenda (paper 17.09.09)

Authors: Christophe Barlieb (CDMB Architects), Christoph Richter, Björn Greschner (Berlin University of Technology, Berlin, Germany), Martin Tamke (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark).

Abstract: Low frequency noise generated by aircraft during pre-takeoff, takeoff, landing and post-landing operations equates to high levels of undesirable ground noise pollution. This phenomenon is gaining heightened popular interest among air transportation specialists and agencies as urban settlements and airports expand beyond post-war city limits to meet demands of the 21st Century. This paper highlights the advantages of employing digital tools in tight collaboration with academics and professionals at the early stages of the design process and revisits ancient architectural design strategies to arrive at more meaningful and sustainable architectural interventions.

Keywords: Acoustic; Architecture; Opensource; Passive Design; Sustainability.
